Backup and data recovery
Everyone agrees that backups are important, but few people bother with them until it is too late. Consider the impact if your critical records are lost through hardware failure, accidental deletion, fire or theft of your system. You need your critical data to be available no matter what happens. To backup your records may be as simple as burning your key files to CD and storing them offsite. If you have access to a broadband connection, you can use an online data vault. If you have accidentally deleted a file, remember to check in the Recycle Bin first. If your Microsoft Office file is corrupted, see the page here. At this point, you need to weigh up the value of a data recovery service.
Data recovery services typically use specialised software and techniques to recover files directly from your crashed hard drive, or may work directly to restore a damaged file. If you go ahead, don't continue to use the PC as this will reduce the probability of getting back the information. |
What to look for in a data recovery service Geographical location - don't choose a service in a different country if a comparable service is available nearby! Turnaround time - most critical data needs to be recovered quickly. Does the service offer a guaranteed turnaround time? Services - choose a firm that offers what you need - e.g. if your hard drive has crashed, make sure that this is the type of work they do. Facilities - if your hard drive has crashed, you need a vendor with a clean room facility in order for it to be opened Credibility - how long has the firm been in business? Can you check with someone else who has used them? Price - a higher price doesn't necessarily mean better service - shop around. |
